This beautiful Maple fife is made by Ralph Sweet of the
Sweetheart Flute Company. Mr. Sweet pays great attention to detail, and it shows in the
quality of his work. It is approx. 13" long, and tuned to the key of "D" (D
and G are the most popular for traditional Irish music, this fife plays easily in both
keys). This is an excellent first instrument for someone that wants to try their hand on a
flute-like instrument, without paying a great deal of money. It is also a very good
additional instrument for any woodwind player.
It is fingered exactly the same as a Tinwhistle, and has the
same two octave range. It has a wonderful, breathy, flute-like tone, and can be played
loud enough to keep up in sessions with other instruments. The key of the fife and its
individual serial number are inscribed on back (see 2nd pic).
