Looking over your wonderful site. I am contemplating learning the penny whistle and have copied your tutorials for a starter.

Thanks again.

Leigh Vinall   11/March./2005

I have been searching for instructions for ages - since finding my tin whistle at a garage sale several years ago.  I will probably drive my family crazy as I learn, but here goes, just in time for St Patrick's Day!  I promise I will drive all the snakes out of Australia!  Many thanks for your very interesting website.

Kyle Harding   29/December./2004

Hi everyone

Thanks very much for this site, I am just starting out on the Tin Whistle (thanks to my lovely hubby who told Santa!) and this looks like a great place to get some info on how to play!

Bob Weaver   09/March/2003
My name is Bob Weaver.  I have really gotten interested in the whistle playing.  I make my on whistles out of copper water pipe.  I have made them in numerous keys and enjoy playing them all.  I also have a T&G low whistle that I am very fond of.  Whistle playing came easy for me since I already played the Highland Bagpipes.  My Bag Pipes are a set of Granger & Campbell made in Scotland around 1970.  They are made of African Black Wood.  I rebuild, repair and tune pipe organs and reed organs on the side this gave me a good foundation in tuning and temperament.  The whistles I am proud of and enjoy playing are my low big bore D and low C whistles out of copper. Each will play the proper pitch with one finger up at a time going up the scale and approx 2 1/2 octaves.  No notes are noticeable flat doing this which I sort of test my whistles when voicing them.  The sweetest whistle I made is my Alto F whistle.  I have given some away for fun to people who
appreciate such things in my church.  Have had request for me to make them for some people.  I had rather it not  become a job, but remain a pastime joy for me to promote folk music and the beautiful instruments to provide it with the human voice. I hope to hear from people interested in  folk music etc.

very truly yours,  Bob Weaver

Hi all!!
Greetings from Argentinean Patagonia!!!
Very nice web page. I played the tutorial's tunes with a flute because by the moment is very difficult to my to get a whistle on these latitudes...but now I've discovered your store so I feel closer to my first original whistle!!!

Thanks for this space & opportunity

Regards & best wishes 4 you all!!!

This is wonderful site. I am new to the whistle. I just receied my order of 2 Walton Little Blacks and the Step One book and CD (Which is excellent to begin with). All came vry fast and in excellent condition. As I progress, I will be making all my purchases here. The support is above and beyond......
I am very happy to see the Pay Pal method accepted here as well. I probably would not yet have made my purchase if it were not. I first came here after being outbid on a auction. I have never been happier to lose a auction.
Thanks, and keep up the great work.

Hello Whistle Shop!

This is the second time I have ordered from you. I have just started
playing the whistle, and I playing now with a group called "Out of the
Mist" here is Tulsa. We have myself...taa daah on the whistle..a
wonderful fiddle player, Bodhran drum, and guitar player...we are a
traditional Scottish band...and I want to say that your beginning
recommendations for my whistles was right on the money. I started with
the Clarke Sweetone...very easy fingering...then I got the Oak D and
Clare D both of which have much better sound and I play primarily on
the Oak D because I like the sound on it best. I have been playing now
for 3 months and I found your instruction book and on line tutorial to
be of great benefit. Also your prices are WONDERFUL. You make
starting out affordable especially for someone who wasn't sure that
they really would take to playing the whistle. I just want to thank
you so much for website.
I have ordered today a Gill recorder...which I have a

Wow...
Great site!
I, too am a beginner (I bought a Feadog D a month ago.) I taught
myself to play w/ just a fingering chart, but would like to be able to
talk to more experienced players because I am having some problems.
1) It's hard to find sheet music w/in my present range
2) I'm having trouble hitting high notes (anything above O X X X X X)

I'm also looking for a specific song's sheet music: "The False Bride,"
aka "I once loved a lass."

go to my homepage (above) and check out the ireland page to hear it.

so: if anyone can help me, email me at O_Linn@dublin.com thanks!
also, is there a good forum you know about?

cya!

Is there a history of the Irish whistle? If so I'd like to have a copy of it.

I was walking through the mall here in New Jersey and came across a
Clark Sweetone whistle. I have always wanted to learn how to play some
sort of instrument and I thought this one would be perfect. I picked up
a C and then today I found your website. A D is recommended, but there
is a little conversion that I can do to play the same notes. I am so
glad I found this site. my cat loves to hear me practice although I'm
not too sure my husband will share her sentiments. I will definately be
ordering from this site.
It is wonderful
This whistle makes such a beautiful sound, even when I am a little off.

What a wonderful website! I recently spent some time in Boston and
during my stay there discovered a pub called The Black Rose (Roisin
Dubh)). Every night they have live Irish music performers on their two
small stages. I loved the music so much, I came back several times to
listen to the music. That is where I first discovered the tinwhistle
and I have been enchanted ever since. Thank you for a very user-
friendly and informative site.

I just ordered the Mel Bay's Starter Set for my neighbor and will
probably order one for myself after I purchase a Bodhran first. I have
been playing percussion instruments practically my whole life and I have
recently taken a great interest in Celtic music thanks to the beautiful
mixture of traditional Irish sounds and Pop Music created by The Corrs.
I remember seeing and hearing them for the first time during the
halftime show of a Football game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the
Chicago Bears played at Dublin's Croke Park in 1997. I was completely
impressed with what I was hearing and have been an admirer of those
sounds ever since. Now I own every Corrs CD that I could find in the US
and I can't wait for the new release. My neighbor has become a Corrs fan
also, and we joke about starting a Celtic-Pop band of our own, once he
learns to play. I think it would be pretty funny, seeing as I would be
the only one of the founding members with any British blood thanks to my

I'm a new whistle player. I picked up a Walton's Mellow D while I was
in Ireland with a music trip. The moment I picked it up and played I
fell in love with it. I'm dying to learn on several different types of
whistles, and aim to possibly use it in a praise and worship band at
church. It's a beautiful instrument, and I love the haunting as well as
peppy sounds it has. This site has been an amazing help to me. Thank
you so very much!

'ello there.

I'd just like to take a moment tae say this is one of the best sites
I've seen in quite awhile dealing in tinwhistles/pennywhistles. I
recently purchased the Susato Keldar Soprano D (Ivory) and the belt

I look forward to doing business with you in the future. Thank you for
providing such a lovely shoppe.

The whistle shop and chiff and fipple have been a great help to me and
I imagine a great many others. I've played guitar and sang for years
NOT well by the way!! Then one of my friends after returning from
Ireland gave me a black guiness whistle and challenged me to learn
Danny Boy... I've not picked up the guitar for months I still can't
play Danny Boy and I won't mention where my wife would like to put my
whistles!! I'm sure someone can relate to this..Signed, banned to the
BASEMENT.
PS
It's really not that bad down there

Jenna Woginrich Greetings from BayingOak! 19/Feb/2000:06:57:01
I've been playing the tin whistle for nearly four months now, I've
found it hopelessly addicting yet incredibally enjoyable. I've
dedicated myself to this instrument, and just recently purchased a
newer black Clark because my old tin Clark's fipple was played through!
The Whistle shoppe was wonderful! I ordered my new piece online, two
days later it wasperfectly shipped at my front door! And the prices are
much more reasonable then other online/catolog Celtic music shops. I
suggest anyone who's interested in taking up the whistle make the
Whistle shoppe they're supplier. I know i will.

I am writing a book; the main character in the beginning is a chap
living near Galway. In approx. 1838 he receives, as a gift, a little
tin whistle and he becomes a good player; he will be self taught.
Is the date approx correct i.e. were these little instuments then
available?
If you can give me some more info about their popularity I would
appreciate that.
In that case I will ensure your company's name to be mentioned in the
beginning of the book.
Thank you.

I just received the pretty little Hoover Soprano D I ordered from The
Whistle Shop.
My 5-year old daughter and I went to the post office to pick up the
package. The lady at the post office was curious and wanted us to open
it up right there ("To make sure the light package actually contained
what we wanted"). We opened the box, and found the whistle carefully
wrapped in paper. When it finally emerged everyone standing around
commented on how pretty it was. I played a couple of hornpipe's and I
was amazed at how little air it took. A single breath could last
forever. It was like playing on pixiedust. My daughter danced out of
the post office to the music.
This Hoover D is so narrow it can fit in my Generation D (which can fit
in my Walton's Mellow D). The sound is almost fragile. The second and
third octave are amazingly clear, sweet and bright.
It is very quiet and would be perfect for anyone worried about the
neighbours. However, dogs seem perfectly tuned to the 3rd octav

Just received small order for whistles and music. I guess I have
ordered from just about every celtic music website on the net. Service
was very fast and efficient, but I am not one to accept excellent
service, products and prices without suggestions for even more. Here
goes: would like to see the cd's available as promised for the 110
Irish tunes book, the 110 Irish slow airs. I cannot believe the
chromatic tuner you are handling. years ago I paid $345.00 for a tuner
for the highland bagpipe which looks very similar to the one you are
handling. oh well. Would like to see you handle any music or tutorials
by Mary Bergin. Thanks for being there and I look forward to visiting
your site often and ordering much merchandise in the future.

ok...heres my story. so i play guitar, and was in my local music store
today, paying for a pack of stings. i look down, and see box of sweet
tone whistles on the counter. sooo, i buy one, because my friends and i
play guitars, tom-toms, drums, harmonica's and so on, so i thought it
would be nice to have another instrument to play with. ive had it 2
hours now, and after slf teaching myself the "titanic" peice,
(haha...only tin whistle tune i know so far!) i looked up whistles on
the web, and here i am. i love this thing! i will definetly be playing
it when we play together. i was wondering if anyone knows of the tin
whistle used at the end of the dave matthews tune "dreaming tree" ??
its awesome...check it out!

i find the choice of products and the advice terrific. I am diabled and
play the tinwhistle every day. I was a flutist, but unable to play
flute any more so I get a lot of pleasure from the tinwhistle. It is
inspiring to see your web page. I have played tinwhistle for over 20
years so it is fun to see what there is on the market now!

I really enjoyed being at your web page. This is my very first whistle

that I would improve was to have some books on how to play the whistles
available to look at and have places locally that you could get them
at.

Very nice site - an e-site that's both tasteful and non-pressuring.
And I wish my own chanters had come with as nice a fingering chart as
the one you put up on the site.

OK, so I'm not so good with the whistle, but with my only decent ones
gone missing, even I can tell that my old beginner whistles don't sound
so good.

I really like the Clarke Sweetones. Not just for the colors, which are
funky, or the mellow sound, but the tapered tube seems easier to me to
finger than a straight tube.

I got to your website via www.concertina.net and Chiff and Fipple. You
have an excellent website -- very attractive, nicely set up, and easy to
get around. I found it very informative also, with lots of valuable
suggestions and information. I enjoyed the site very much, and learned a
lot about whistles, too. Come to think of it, you must have some kind of
subliminal forces on your site. I just bought 4 whistles, cases to keep
them in, and a book to teach me how to play them. Now THAT'S a good
website! If possible, I would appreciate seeing a snail mail address
also. I would like to know your actual geographic location in the
physical world, as well as knowing your URL somewhere in the ether.
Thanks! I am waiting for my whistles. My dog will love them. I don't
know about my wife, though. I'll let you know.

I recently purchased a Clark Tweeked Penny Whistle, and began
playing immediately when it arrived. It truly is a fine little musical
instrument, and exceeded my expectations quit a bit. I'm sure to have
learned a few good tunes by Renn Faire next June. Thanks, and keep up
the good work. I highly recommend your Tweeked Clark Penny Whistle.

Hello!
Just a brief note introducing ourselves. I have been wholesaling
whistles in the UK and Europe since about 1983 - seems like a lifetime.
If your shop would like some of Dave Shaws instruments I buy 99% of his
whistle output. Please visit our website for information on the history
of the modern low whistles from the viewpoints of Bernard Overton and
Finbar Furey.
ThankDave

My younger brother living in Arkansas introduced me to the Chiff -&-
Fipple newsletter/site, which stimulated a long dormant interest in the
tinwhistle. Just returned from spending a few days with him and, after
playing a few of his growing collection of instruments, decided it was
time to place an order. Beautiful website! Intend to share "my"
discovery with a few of my other retired military musicians.

Tabitha Devine Robin   23/Oct/1999:16:39:08
I have always loved the sound of the tin whistle. Must be all that
Irish heritage runnin' through me veins! :) I've wanted one forever,
and when my family watched "Waking Ned Devine" the other night, and I
knew I simply must have one. I was a vocal major in college, and I am
begging for a whistle for Christmas. At these fabulous prices, maybe I
can talk my husband into two or three! Thanks for having this
wonderfully informative site. I will definitely be checking back.
(Yes, that's my real maiden name) :)

I'm a Freshman in High School and have played the Soprano Clarinet for
four years and the Bass Clarinet for over two years, but when I heard
the songs on Lord of the Dance and Titanic I had to find a whistle. I
must say this is the best whistle site on the net. You get a response
to your order within only hours and receive it within only days. I
really like the Celtic Tinwhistle it has a real nice sound. It didn't
take to long for me to get used to since it's fingered almost the same
as the upper register of a clarinet. I think I'm going to order a
Susato Low D next since it's said to take more air, thats what I'm used
to ( playing the Bass Clarinet takes a lot of air ).

Thanks for everything,
Sheena Eastin

Great service and selection. Very pleased with Thom's courteous responses to my questions, and good advice. If you're in the market for a whistle (and I daresay thou art, lest ye would not be here), this is the place to be! My humble recommendation for a good, affordable whistle is Susato. Clear tone, great intonation - both pennywhistle and Low D whistle. I'm very happy with The Whistle Shop!

I knew this instrument, tin whistle from a music team, The Corr when I
listened to their album. There is the first time I knew Irish music and
melody. I like the instrument and the melody very much. So that I want
to learn it. I have looking for many places in my city to get the tin
whistle, but most of the people didn't know what instrument is this.
Luckily I have found "The Whistle Shop".

I have been interested in a little whistle that I saw on, of all
places, a Star Trek show. They called it a Ressikan flute. I finally
found out that it was in reality a Penny Whistle. I was so excited!! so
I searched the internet and found this site. Great layout, good
selection of whistles and ..... a GREAT Tutorial. So I bought a Tweeked
Clarke. I am looking forward to learning and teaching my children this
wonderful little instrument

The Whistle Shop is GREAT!!! Thom is super nice and fast to e-mail back
with the answers to my questions! I love the Susato Whistle! It plays
great the entire range of the instrument. It will allow me to put lots of

best whistle that I've played and it's super resonable!
The Whistle shop is AAAAAA++++++!!!

Hello !
I am French and i've just discovered a new music instrument :
The Tin Whistle... It was 23h00 at night, and i saw something
on the TV that i will never forget during my life :
It was the CORRS !!!! They were so lovely, mainly Andrea Corr,
She played Tin Whistle and it was so melodious that i decided
to learn playing it...

On this words, long life to the Tin Whistle and obviously,
to the corrs !!!!!!

I have really enjoyed the two Walton whistles I bought from TWS. I'm
glad you put descriptions of the whistles in your catalog, as well as
the beginner suggestions (for whistles). My Little black "D" is great
to learn a tune on, and the Mellow "D" is wonderful to play for a, you
got it, more mellow sound. Thanks for the advice. I can't learn new
songs fast enough.
