How to record the first vocal for a duet at Ksolo

Questions? - contact me through my Ksolo page

The idea of this is that you want to make a recording of just your vocal, but it needs to be in sync with Ksolo's music.

For me, it's best if you do this recording with no effects (no reverb, delay, etc.) - I can add these when I'm mixing it down (but if you can not easily turn off your effects, it will be fine to have them on there...). Other people on Ksolo might prefer to have you add effects when you're doing a duet with them (you should just ask them before you do it).

Note that this is how all of this works on my computer - if your computer has a different Operating System (or depending on your computer's soundcard), things might work a little differently...

1. Right-click your mouse on the little image of a speaker in the lower right-hand corner of your Desktop (on the Task Bar), then choose "Open Volume Controls". This will open the "Master Volume" control panel (if there is not a little speaker image on the right side of your Task Bar, click here to see how to put it there).

2. In the Master Volume Control Panel, choose "Options" (in the upper left corner of the panel), then choose "Properties":

3. In the "Properties" panel, click the "Recording" radio button, then make sure that all of the boxes are checked under "Show the following volume controls". Then click the "OK" button"

4. This will bring up the "Recording" Control Panel. Make a note of which controls have "Select" checked right now (so that you can restore your computer to how it was in the first place...). Then uncheck every box EXCEPT for "Microphone".

5. That should do it - when you record your song at Ksolo now, you should be able to hear the music just fine to sing along with it, but when you listen back to your recording, you should only hear your vocal. Note that recording this way works best using headphones - if you're using your computer's speakers to listen while you're singing, a little of the speaker's sound will come through your microphone along with your voice. If you don't have headphones, having a little of the instrumental on there will still be ok (as long as it's not too loud...).

6. Now all you have to do is post the recording at your page at Ksolo, so that I can make a copy of it. Many people don't like the sound of their voices with no instruments, so if you don't want to leave the recording posted at your page for very long, just save it as "Private" for now, then contact me. I'll let you know what day and time I should be able to get a copy of it made, so that you can just make it "Public" for a little while. I'll let you know when I've made my copy, so that you can make it "Private" again (or delete it).

7. When your done with your recording, you'll want to put your computer back to how it was in the first place - just follow the steps above, but when you get to Step 4, recheck all the boxes that were checked in the first place.
